dirty dish qees for vinylmore 2

So I had some mini "qees" to paint for atomic books vinylmore 2 show and decided to do some characters from my comics. I have definitely acquired a new appreciation for people who paint lord of the rings miniatures or whatever.

Balancing a 1.5 inch tall head on my pinky, trying to paint a tiny spot i can't even see, dropping the whole thing into the mess of epoxy and paint all over my desk.. and wow they actually came out sort of cool. More detail shots here.

bsg sketches

in honor of the series finale tonight I wanted to do some portraits of battlestar galactica characters.. if you dont know already it's a fantastic show... I finally gave it a chance and devoured the first 3 seasons on DVD in maybe 2 weeks.

Adama (Edward James Olmos) was easy, but I must have drawn Boomer/Sharon/Athena (Grace Park) about 400 times and still don't have it right. I really want to get a good Starbuck with her knocking back a shot, maybe I'll work on more next week.. where do they get all the booze & cigarettes in outer space anyway??

snow white

Hopefully only the first in a series of "fantasy philadelphia" paintings.. this one an homage to chestnut street around 17th - 20th street, with many liberties taken... When I first moved here this neighborhood pretty much summed up David Lynch's great quotes about philadelphia - half abandoned office supply stores, crazies and drunks everywhere, strange religious messages in the pavement, $2 to see Bio-Dome in a beautiful art deco movie theatre where your feet stuck to the floor and the film broke halfway through.

A lot of this was probably due to the fact that chestnut was closed to traffic from 18th to 6th street from 1976 to the late 90's in an attempt to create a "european style" pedestrian commercial district. Say whatever you want about what's "good" for a city, in good economic times old buildings are ripped down with no regard for history. I love the fact that I can stand on 19th & chestnut and see pieces of philadelphia going back all the way to the 40's and 70's and so on.. the sleazy and the fancy all mixed together, something unique to Philadelphia that should be embraced rather than fought.

It's not really the same these days but the layers of history are still there and it's almost even better to see a 4 star restaurant next to a cigar-filled ticket office where a guy in a wife-beater makes your keys. You can still look up and see faded advertisements for bread and all the amazing half-crumbling buildings.. I feel like this painting barely does justice to the architecture and the history here. Anyway this isn't purely a historical piece, obviously a lot of this stuff is not on the same block,or wasn't around at the same time, or doesn't even exist.

weekly comic

so every tuesday or wednesday I'm going to post a new smaller format comic, mostly installments of "dirty dish" but possibly some other junk thrown in for good measure.

I've been meaning to do this for years, there really is no excuse not to do a new strip every week.

The Office is probably the funniest show on TV right now. I love that they somehow mix cheesy romance with black humor, that it's smart and low-brow at the same time and it works.

Of course everyone loves Dwight and Michael Scott but some of the other characters are even funnier, especially the "nard-dog" who has a great face to draw and wild facial expressions. I'm also working on Toby and Creed but it's been tough to get a spot-on likeness.

dirty dish for Heeb Magazine

Just finished this new comic for the back page of Heeb. You can see previous dirty dish comics on my website. The story has been sort of jumping around from working at a bar to working at a restaurant and even a 7-11. One day it will all make sense..
