Philly Phoodie Hoagie Art

Commissioned piece for Thad of Philly Phoodie, an awesome local blog that covers all sorts of food but lots and lots of hoagies. I thought I ate a lot of hoagies but this dude definitely rivals or exceeds my hoagie intake, keeping it in check by cycling to most (all?) of his sandwich destinations, hitting all sorts of incredible spots that you've never heard of all over the city.

This painting is mostly based on the awesome looking sandwiches from Jack's Place in the northeast - never been but check out the Philly Phoodie post for info.  HUGE thanks to Gabrielle (Thad's girlfriend and official blog photographer) who commissioned this one for his 30th birthday.

Yellow Boy's Polish Boys

Artwork for Yellow Boy's Polish Boy, a cart in Colombus Ohio that serves the (previously) unique to Cleveland "Polish Boy" - a kielbasa covered in fries and cole slaw served at places like Freddie's Southern Rib House and Hot Sauce Williams, made semi-famous by Cleveland native Michael Symon who has featured it on a bunch of food shows. 

Yellow Boy's cart is run by Marcus Spivey who sets up around Columbus late night on the weekends as well as special events like the Columbus Country Music Festival (pictured above with the Lee Gantt Band.) Check it this article or follow Marcus on twitter for more info.

The Burger Map - Utah Royal Pastrami Burger

Last but not least in this series is The Burger Map's version of Utah's Pastrami Burger, a crazy fusion of NY deli and Utah Greek fast food immortalized by John T Edge's 2009 New York Times article. 

Probably my favorite piece of the series along with the Fried Onion Burger and also the burger I'm most dying to try. I guess you can find a burger with pastrami on it at plenty of places but I doubt it's going to look as good as this (photo from Robyn Lee / A Hamburger Today)

I really like how they're wrapped in a parchment sleeve... also important is the "fry sauce" that they put on everything, like most "secret sauces" it's basically russian dressing plus something else but something about the combo of Greek looking lettering and something called "fry sauce" just seems fantastic. Anyway here's Burger Map's version.

Tthe original is painting is currently hanging at Hot Diggity (630 South Street Philadelphia) where several people have try to order it every day. (Put it on the menu already dude!!!!)

The Burger Map - Fatty Melt

Illustration #4 in the Burger Map series is the infamous Fatty Melt. A hamburger served between two grilled cheese sandwiches. The Burger Map's version adds bacon, and more cheese on top of the burger as well as in the sandwiches. Jesus.

The background behind this one is sort of interesting. It sort of originated at the Mossy Creek Cafe in Fishersville, Virginia where it was called the "Chubby Melt" and included fried onions and mushrooms. But it didn't really become a "thing" until my friends over at A Hamburger Today created their own version in 2008, after which half of the food trucks and over the top burger joints put it on their menus.

The strange thing is, I can't for the life of my find a photo of the original, and since then Mossy Creek  has closed for good, sort of a sad truth of how these food trends usually pan out - the hipster food trucks multiply and "thoughtfully update" concepts from small town places that can barely stay in business - but who knows maybe it wasn't ever really that good. Anyway, the Burger Map version (pictured above) looks great. TACO MADNESS 2012

Artwork for this year's LATACO.COM march-madness style "best taco in LA" bracket.  I did a similar piece last year and was super excited to do it again for 2012. This year it's a crazy shrimp taco. Lots of fun.

Cover for Willamette Week - Dr Know's Lies My Newspaper Told Me

A while back I did a WW cover introducing "Dr Know", a humorous weekly Q & A column that covers everything from Portland urban legends, chemtrails, and whether or not your light bulbs are destroying the planet. This week's cover story is all about how local food, hybrid cars, solar energy, and hands free cell phone laws are bullshit.

They actually used the cover from 2009 inside the issue, along with some blown-up type from the cover. Looks pretty awesome.

Also a bunch of spots. This one taken from the local foods segment. "If you really cared about the Earth, you'd spend your evenings alone and childless, sobbing quietly in a darkened room, like me."

Although it was fun to draw the logo of "Dave's Killer Bread" (in the background of the cover) - local Portland organic whole wheat breads with awesome illustrated packaging made by an ex meth dealer.

Also bullshit is home ownership. According to Dr Know, if you put your down payment into an Index Fund instead of buying a house, by 2042 you'd have "an extra $75,000 to blow on space-coke and replicant hookers." They didn't let me illustrate that one so instead you get Dr Know angrily fixing a toilet.
