The Burger Map - Fatty Melt

Illustration #4 in the Burger Map series is the infamous Fatty Melt. A hamburger served between two grilled cheese sandwiches. The Burger Map's version adds bacon, and more cheese on top of the burger as well as in the sandwiches. Jesus.

The background behind this one is sort of interesting. It sort of originated at the Mossy Creek Cafe in Fishersville, Virginia where it was called the "Chubby Melt" and included fried onions and mushrooms. But it didn't really become a "thing" until my friends over at A Hamburger Today created their own version in 2008, after which half of the food trucks and over the top burger joints put it on their menus.

The strange thing is, I can't for the life of my find a photo of the original, and since then Mossy Creek  has closed for good, sort of a sad truth of how these food trends usually pan out - the hipster food trucks multiply and "thoughtfully update" concepts from small town places that can barely stay in business - but who knows maybe it wasn't ever really that good. Anyway, the Burger Map version (pictured above) looks great. Process shots & more info below.

The Burger Map - Blue Ring Burger

Next up in the Burger Map project - a series of 5 paintings for an American style burger bar in Sao Paolo Brazil - is the Blue Ring Burger.

This one is based on the Western Blue Ring Burger from Gott's Roadside (originally known as Taylor's Automatic Refresher from 1949 - 2010) in San Francisco and Napa Valley.

Here's a shot of the original original Blue Ring Burger -on the left- from Taylor's. (Photo from Marshall Astor on Flickr)

And here's Burger Map's version and photo they sent me for reference. You can see more on foodspotting

A blast to draw, and again it's amazing and also sort of frustrating that these facsimiles of legendary regional American burgers exist in Brazil but not Philly or New York.

Burger Heaven

Check out this crazy exploded burger illustration for Cincinnati Magazine's "40 Best Burgers" Issue. The original painting is so big it hung off the sides of my drawing table. Seriously one of the coolest freelance jobs I've done.

Also- Cincinnati's best Veggie Burger. Honestly I had no idea Cincinnati had such an awesome food scene outside of 4-way chili. Places like Senate that do wild burgers along with korean kimchi & shortrib hot dogs and even a croque madame with ham and hot dog on brioche drowned in bechamel sauce and a fried egg. Wow.
