The Burger Map - Utah Royal Pastrami Burger

Last but not least in this series is The Burger Map's version of Utah's Pastrami Burger, a crazy fusion of NY deli and Utah Greek fast food immortalized by John T Edge's 2009 New York Times article

Probably my favorite piece of the series along with the Fried Onion Burger and also the burger I'm most dying to try. I guess you can find a burger with pastrami on it at plenty of places but I doubt it's going to look as good as this (photo from Robyn Lee / A Hamburger Today)

I really like how they're wrapped in a parchment sleeve... also important is the "fry sauce" that they put on everything, like most "secret sauces" it's basically russian dressing plus something else but something about the combo of Greek looking lettering and something called "fry sauce" just seems fantastic. Anyway here's Burger Map's version.

And the process photos...

Tthe original is painting is currently hanging at Hot Diggity (630 South Street Philadelphia) where several people have try to order it every day. (Put it on the menu already dude!!!!)

The Burger Map - Fatty Melt

Illustration #4 in the Burger Map series is the infamous Fatty Melt. A hamburger served between two grilled cheese sandwiches. The Burger Map's version adds bacon, and more cheese on top of the burger as well as in the sandwiches. Jesus.

The background behind this one is sort of interesting. It sort of originated at the Mossy Creek Cafe in Fishersville, Virginia where it was called the "Chubby Melt" and included fried onions and mushrooms. But it didn't really become a "thing" until my friends over at A Hamburger Today created their own version in 2008, after which half of the food trucks and over the top burger joints put it on their menus.

The strange thing is, I can't for the life of my find a photo of the original, and since then Mossy Creek  has closed for good, sort of a sad truth of how these food trends usually pan out - the hipster food trucks multiply and "thoughtfully update" concepts from small town places that can barely stay in business - but who knows maybe it wasn't ever really that good. Anyway, the Burger Map version (pictured above) looks great. Process shots & more info below.

The Burger Map - Texas Chili Burger

Next up in the Burger Map series (paintings for an American style burger joint in Brazil) the San Antonio Texas Chili Burger. Definitely one for the food historians - a Brazilian version of an American "Mexican" style hamburger that you're more likely to find at a texas-themed Greek luncheonette in Pennsylvania (sans tortilla chips) than anywhere in San Antonio (which has a terrific burger scene - but where "Chili Burger" usually means green chile, not meat sauce). Whew. Anyway. Looks delicious and lots of fun to draw.

Fancy reference photos of Burger Map's Chili Burger. Check out some shots on foodspotting too.

Progress shots.. below poster and T-shirt at the restaurant.. looks awesome!

The Burger Map - Blue Ring Burger

Next up in the Burger Map project - a series of 5 paintings for an American style burger bar in Sao Paolo Brazil - is the Blue Ring Burger.

This one is based on the Western Blue Ring Burger from Gott's Roadside (originally known as Taylor's Automatic Refresher from 1949 - 2010) in San Francisco and Napa Valley.

Here's a shot of the original original Blue Ring Burger -on the left- from Taylor's. (Photo from Marshall Astor on Flickr)

And here's Burger Map's version and photo they sent me for reference. You can see more on foodspotting

A blast to draw, and again it's amazing and also sort of frustrating that these facsimiles of legendary regional American burgers exist in Brazil but not Philly or New York.

The Burger Map in Brazil - Fried Onion Burger

I recently finished a series of five paintings for The Burger Map, a restaurant and bar in Sao Paolo, Brazil that specializes in American regional hamburgers. They have prints of the artwork hanging in the restaurant and t-shirts are in the works as well.

Instead of trying to jam in all into one giant post I'm going to do maybe one a week showing process shots of the artwork as well as some background on the burger styles and photos of both the original and Burger Map's version. Enjoy!

First up is El Reno, Oklahoma's Fried Onion Burger. The burgers are smashed onto a well seasoned flat grill into a big pile of carmelized onions. The big two spots are Johnnie's Grill (pictured above) and Sid's. There's even an annual El Reno Fried Onion Burger festival.

Massive pile of fried onion sketch. One of my favorites to draw and I still haven't eaten one of these things, in Brazil or Oklahoma, or even Sketch Burger in Philly that has something pretty close.

Here's Burger Map's version, photo taken in the kitchen that I used for reference.

Bunch of progress shots. The original is actually hanging up in Hot Diggity right now.

Another shot of Burger Map's Fried Onion burger, this one with cheese and from Aline F on foodspotting.
