GREEN DAWN weed issue cover for Willamette Week

For Portland's Willamette Week, for which I am apparently the official illustrator of Marijuana. This job was a blast, and made me think a lot about the old illustrated "Hemp 100" or "Pot 40" pages in the back of High Times that probably influenced me without really knowing it. Why is there not a coffee table book of these? Why do they not do this page anymore? I'm up for it.

Also if you don't know, "Willie Weed", the paper's official marijuana mascot / columnist is loosely based on legendary pothead / hippie / vegetarian basketball star Bill Walton. Anyway. on with illustrations.

Then there's this handy guide to deciding what type of weed to smoke. In order to turn the google spreadsheet they sent me into some sort of manageable illustration I plastered my walls with crazy person diagrams like Carrie in Homeland.

And also a guide to cannabis consumption devices. Until now I had no idea what "Vaping" was.

And finally a mess of spot illustrations about "dealer etiquette". Read more here.

Repo The Genetic Opera cosplay VS Rocky Horror Fans

For Willamette Week in Portland. About the Clinton Theater which plays Rocky Horror to costumed fans every Saturday night, and "Repo The Genetic Opera", a dystopian industrial-rock opera (film) starring Paris Hilton and a guy from Skinny Puppy, for which people also dress up for.

WILLIE WEED

Column header for a new Willamette Week column about Oregon's coming legal/sort of legal/medical/etc cannibis industry.

I learned all about "trichomes", listened to lots of jungle and looked at hundreds of photos of "Old School Pure Kush".

Off Campus Guide for Willamette Week

Recently Willamette Week in Portland asked me to do a whole mess of illustrations for their Off Campus student guide. Best thrift stores, hookah bars, coffee shops, cheap eats, basement shows.

Also how to throw a keg party and not end up living in a van & working at a donut store after you graduate. Fun stuff. Huge thanks to the art department at Wweek for always giving me awesome things to draw.

Vanifest Destiny

Logo for a new Willamette Week column about a dude that lives in his van. He recently quit his crappy coffeeshop job in Ohio, bought a van, drove it to Portland, and is going to live in it all summer.

They went with a slightly different logo w/ solid lettering. The column is going to appear 2 or 3 times a week on the website with highlights in the paper. You might roll your eyes at "coffeeshop guy living in a van in Portland" but hell he's really doing it, and I'm definitely excited to check it out every week.

Also it was just kind of awesome to have an excuse to draw metal lettering and Uncle Rico vans.

Cover for Willamette Week - Dr Know's Lies My Newspaper Told Me

A while back I did a WW cover introducing "Dr Know", a humorous weekly Q & A column that covers everything from Portland urban legends, chemtrails, and whether or not your light bulbs are destroying the planet. This week's cover story is all about how local food, hybrid cars, solar energy, and hands free cell phone laws are bullshit.

They actually used the cover from 2009 inside the issue, along with some blown-up type from the cover. Looks pretty awesome.

Also a bunch of spots. This one taken from the local foods segment. "If you really cared about the Earth, you'd spend your evenings alone and childless, sobbing quietly in a darkened room, like me."

Although it was fun to draw the logo of "Dave's Killer Bread" (in the background of the cover) - local Portland organic whole wheat breads with awesome illustrated packaging made by an ex meth dealer.

Also bullshit is home ownership. According to Dr Know, if you put your down payment into an Index Fund instead of buying a house, by 2042 you'd have "an extra $75,000 to blow on space-coke and replicant hookers." They didn't let me illustrate that one so instead you get Dr Know angrily fixing a toilet.

Willamette Week Cheap Eats Guide

So for Willamette Week's annual Cheap Eats Guide they asked me to do a hot dog T-shirt design, that they actually printed and put on a dude that sort of looks like me and squirted some mustard on him. Awesome.

The photos were all shot by photographer Chris Ryan.

Along with the photo on the pull-out Cheap Eats Guide they also used a full color version of the design for the cover of the issue.

SPJ Award

Whoa! Apparently I won an award from the Northwest chapter of the Society For Professional Journalists, for this Willamette Week cover I did last year. Had no idea it was in the running for anything.

Much thanks to Ben & Tom at Willamette Week who have given me some awesome assignments, and I'm sure were up until 4 in the morning trying to figure out where the hell to fit the logo and headlines into this crazy illustration.

Here's a link to the full list of Award Winners, congrats to all!

Sewer Bucks

Portland's mayor is taking money from water and sewer taxes to fund college scholarships. Somehow I've become the go-to illustrator for anything involving gushing and spurting fluids! For Willamette Week.

Blue Iguana Baseball

Super last minute illustration for Willamette Week.

Here's the deal... a Latino nightclub outside of Portland called The Blue Iguana - don't miss their myspace page for shots of the thong contest - is in danger of being torn down to make way for a new Minor League baseball stadium in Beaverton.

Portland Highland Games

I love that I get a lot of jobs about octoberfest, renaissance faires, and now scottish highland games. I'm just waiting for my first LARP assignment to come along.

I had no idea what a Ned was until doing this either. Pretty much the scottish equivelent of a soccer hooligan mixed with thuggish white trash.

For Willamette Week.
