La Taco Madness 2011

Recently finished this illustration for LA TACO's 2011 "Taco Madness" which is a March Madness bracket style competition pitting 32 of Los Angeles best tacos against each other.

Checking out photo after photo of LA tacos made me pretty hungry and jealous of the taco scene out there. Anyway it was awesome to go outside the hot dog zone, some prints of the art will be available soon!

Check out the bracket at LATACO.com.

Burger Heaven

Check out this crazy exploded burger illustration for Cincinnati Magazine's "40 Best Burgers" Issue. The original painting is so big it hung off the sides of my drawing table. Seriously one of the coolest freelance jobs I've done.

Also- Cincinnati's best Veggie Burger. Honestly I had no idea Cincinnati had such an awesome food scene outside of 4-way chili. Places like Senate that do wild burgers along with korean kimchi & shortrib hot dogs and even a croque madame with ham and hot dog on brioche drowned in bechamel sauce and a fried egg. Wow.

VendrTV Wallet

VendrTV Wallets are finally available! VendrTV is a terrific site all about street food with short videos profiling carts and trucks all over the country. Dan Delaney who runs the site asked me to illustrate their first promotional item and they turned out awesome.

Made by Tinymeat in Portland, these wallets are 25 bucks each and get you discounts at food trucks all over the country. I think they are only making a few hundred and they seem to be going fast. More information at VendrTV.

Serious Eats shopping bags

Crazy sandwich design for a Serious Eats promotional re-usable Baggu shopping bag. A whole fried fish, sausages, random deli meats, lettuce and tomato. Hot dogs are great to draw but it's nice to branch out into some other food groups every so often.

Right now they're only available as contest giveaways but I'm pretty sure they will be for sale in the near future.

food food food

Pretty much everything I'm working on right now is food related, which is amazing, but I'm hungry all the time. I'm pretty sure the part of the brain that's used to mix colors and cook is the same. I almost want to lick the brush to make sure it tastes right.

But it's really disappointing to paint slow braised carnitas and juicy burgers all day, then open the fridge to find off-brand english muffins, 2 week old chinese take-out, and a solitary chicken drumstick in the freezer.

Toronto Street Meat

Last week's Hot Dog Of The Week for Serious Eats.
I can never decide whether to post these here or drawingforfood.. anyway Toronto has some wild hot dog carts where they slice up the dogs in crazy patterns and serve them with weird stuff like corn relish and canned mushrooms.

Eating Animals

Illustration for Baltimore Citypaper review of Jonathan Safran Foer's latest book condemning the meat industry.

No, I'm not giving up hot dogs, but I do agree with Foer calling out the overuse of terms such as "organic" and "natural" - basically just a way around the consumers guilt and back into their wallets.

Chicago Dogs

Latest hot dog piece. Tried to evoke a little bit of the feel of old school Chicago hot dog lettering. Check out the full post on Serious Eats.

One of the best things about chicago hot dog culture is all the different lettering & signage on the stands. A lot of the older ones are hand painted. Go have some fun on Flickr if you want to see more.

Detroit Coney

Latest Hot Dog Of The Week.
Detroit and Michigan serve their hot dogs blanketed in heaping mounds of Greek chili made with beef hearts and kidneys .

In case you're confused, Detroit Coney dogs have little to do with Coney Island in Brooklyn. Greek immigrants who stopped at Coney Island in NY on their way to Michigan opened up diners called "Coney Islands" and called their chili and mustard covered dogs "Coneys".

I didn't even realize when I was painting this last week, but apparently they filmed a scene from Whip It - Drew Barrymore's new Roller Derby movie - at Lafayette Coney Island, one of the oldest & most well known of Detroit's Coney spots.

For a fiction piece about a turf war between two NYC hot dog vendors.

Slaw Dog

Latest hot dog of the week for Serious Eats.

The West Virginia Hot Dog Blog loved my art but was pissed that I called it a "Slaw Dog". I guess in West Virginia that's kind of like ordering a cheesesteak with blue cheese and bean sprouts.

More Hot Dogs

More hot dog illustrations for Serious Eats.

The Texas Weiner started in New Jersey and was created by Greeks but called "Texas" as a marketing gimmick. It's a dog with beanless chili (aka greek sauce) and raw onions. I was lucky enough to hit up a Texas Weiner place last week in Central PA.

The Puka Dog is a relatively new Hawaiian style hot dog that involves jamming a polish sausage into a mini bread loaf that has a hole in it, and filling it with all kinds of sweet coconut habenero action.

These are gouache on printmaking paper and are definitely for sale.
Prints coming soon!

Flo's Hot Dogs

Latest Installment of my hot dog of the week series for Serious Eats.

This week it's Flo's Hot Dogs on Route 1 in Maine, pretty much the best hot dog of all time.

Check out some shots of the painting in progress on my flickr page, and Look here if you're interested in picking up the original. I'll probably have prints made of these eventually too.

Just finished this up for Serious Eats. I'll be doing a different hot dog every week. Going with real paint & paper on these. Anybody want to host an awesome hot dog art show in a few months?

atlantic city

"hey, you want to do an illustration about giant hoagies, dive bars and pawn shops in atlantic city?"

Wait, am I dreaming? For a NY Press Gut Instinct column.

Devour cover for Willamette Week

I'm always really happy when I get food related jobs, especially when it involves researching things like durian or russian pickled meats, and when I'm instructed to draw a "vat of goo". Awesome. For the hungry shopper's guide to portland.

weekly comic

so every tuesday or wednesday I'm going to post a new smaller format comic, mostly installments of "dirty dish" but possibly some other junk thrown in for good measure.

I've been meaning to do this for years, there really is no excuse not to do a new strip every week.
