The Burger Map - Fatty Melt

Illustration #4 in the Burger Map series is the infamous Fatty Melt. A hamburger served between two grilled cheese sandwiches. The Burger Map's version adds bacon, and more cheese on top of the burger as well as in the sandwiches. Jesus.

The background behind this one is sort of interesting. It sort of originated at the Mossy Creek Cafe in Fishersville, Virginia where it was called the "Chubby Melt" and included fried onions and mushrooms. But it didn't really become a "thing" until my friends over at A Hamburger Today created their own version in 2008, after which half of the food trucks and over the top burger joints put it on their menus.

The strange thing is, I can't for the life of my find a photo of the original, and since then Mossy Creek  has closed for good, sort of a sad truth of how these food trends usually pan out - the hipster food trucks multiply and "thoughtfully update" concepts from small town places that can barely stay in business - but who knows maybe it wasn't ever really that good. Anyway, the Burger Map version (pictured above) looks great. TACO MADNESS 2012

Artwork for this year's LATACO.COM march-madness style "best taco in LA" bracket.  I did a similar piece last year and was super excited to do it again for 2012. This year it's a crazy shrimp taco. Lots of fun.

Check out some process shots below, vote at lataco.com, or if you're in the area check out the $15 all you can eat Taco Madness Party happening next weekend at Restaurant Guelaguetza in Los Angeles.

Cover for Willamette Week - Dr Know's Lies My Newspaper Told Me

A while back I did a WW cover introducing "Dr Know", a humorous weekly Q & A column that covers everything from Portland urban legends, chemtrails, and whether or not your light bulbs are destroying the planet. This week's cover story is all about how local food, hybrid cars, solar energy, and hands free cell phone laws are bullshit.

They actually used the cover from 2009 inside the issue, along with some blown-up type from the cover. Looks pretty awesome.

Also a bunch of spots. This one taken from the local foods segment. "If you really cared about the Earth, you'd spend your evenings alone and childless, sobbing quietly in a darkened room, like me."

Although it was fun to draw the logo of "Dave's Killer Bread" (in the background of the cover) - local Portland organic whole wheat breads with awesome illustrated packaging made by an ex meth dealer.

Also bullshit is home ownership. According to Dr Know, if you put your down payment into an Index Fund instead of buying a house, by 2042 you'd have "an extra $75,000 to blow on space-coke and replicant hookers." They didn't let me illustrate that one so instead you get Dr Know angrily fixing a toilet.

The Burger Map - Texas Chili Burger

Next up in the Burger Map series (paintings for an American style burger joint in Brazil) the San Antonio Texas Chili Burger. Definitely one for the food historians - a Brazilian version of an American "Mexican" style hamburger that you're more likely to find at a texas-themed Greek luncheonette in Pennsylvania (sans tortilla chips) than anywhere in San Antonio (which has a terrific burger scene - but where "Chili Burger" usually means green chile, not meat sauce). Whew. Anyway. Looks delicious and lots of fun to draw.

Fancy reference photos of Burger Map's Chili Burger. Check out some shots on foodspotting too.

Progress shots.. below poster and T-shirt at the restaurant.. looks awesome!

Phony Cereal Boxes for Cincinnati Magazine

Illustrations for "The Last Detail" column by Bob Woodiwiss. Satirical cereal boxes poking fun at local Cincinnati things that I don't know anything about - or didn't until now. Aglamesis Brothers is a Roadfood-approved candy shop known for their ice cream; Indian Hill is a super rich suburb. Probably the closest I'll ever get to illustrating Wacky Packages.

These were in the recent food issue of Cincinnati Magazine, which also had a great write-up on Dixie Chili - whose Alligator Coney I devoured, painted and wrote about for Serious Eats a while back. And lots of props for gourmet hot dog restaurant Senate.

The Burger Map - Blue Ring Burger

Next up in the Burger Map project - a series of 5 paintings for an American style burger bar in Sao Paolo Brazil - is the Blue Ring Burger.

This one is based on the Western Blue Ring Burger from Gott's Roadside (originally known as Taylor's Automatic Refresher from 1949 - 2010) in San Francisco and Napa Valley.

Here's a shot of the original original Blue Ring Burger -on the left- from Taylor's. (Photo from Marshall Astor on Flickr)

And here's Burger Map's version and photo they sent me for reference. You can see more on foodspotting

A blast to draw, and again it's amazing and also sort of frustrating that these facsimiles of legendary regional American burgers exist in Brazil but not Philly or New York.
