More Storage Wars portraits! I've already done Barry and Don Dotson, Mark Bolelo and Dave Hester.. was hoping to have drawings of the whole cast in time for the season finale but just didn't make it.

Darrell Sheets was almost too easy with his awesome Guy Fieri meets beach bum style. In the running for being my favorite character, his website is pretty much the best thing on the internet where you can buy official "Darrell the Gambler" T-shirts and merchandise and even stuff he finds in lockers like an 1890's cast iron spear or a rare Surfaris LP with artwork by Rick Griffin.

I really wanted to wait until I had a good Brandi drawing before putting this up but just haven't gotten her face down yet. You'll have to wait for next season. Anyway Jarrod also has an awesome clothing line Outlaw Apparel featuring ladies with guns and an amazing handcuff logo.

And one more Dave Hester who everyone loves to hate and I hear might not be coming back to the show next season? Also Dave has posted all of my Storage Wars artwork on his facebook page which is amazing.

Don't know what I'm going to until next season, maybe start drawing Victor and Moe from Storage Wars Texas? There's also got to be some way I can combine Storage Wars with hot dogs.. I bet these guys know every good hot dog stand and taco truck in Southern California..

Hot Dog Interior Design

Big thanks to Christa Hayden for sending in these photos of her crazy wall of prints. I don't think I ever expected to see them in such a fancy setting. Looks awesome! The piece above the prints was reclaimed from a torn down house from the 1800's.

Skeeter's is an awesome general store / restaurant in Wytheville Virginia. Glass bottles of coke and famous chili slaw dogs. Also pretty decent pulled pork sandwich.

Ecuador has awesome hot dogs covered in crazy sauces. A set of four with the Torta Salchicha, Perro Caliente and Tijuana Dog prints would make an awesome "Latin American" collection.

Famous Lunch in Troy, NY serves up tiny hot dogs for something like 65 cents each. Buried under their famous "Zippy Sauce" and onions. Also terrific rice pudding.

Dirty O Artwork & Prints

Unfortunately I don't have the time to do a full-on painting every week for Hot Dog Of The Week (my column on Serious Eats).. these things take me at least a few days to finish... but every once in a while there's a place so awesome that it really deserves an illustration. The Dirty O was one of them, awesome food along with awesome hand painted signs covering every inch of the place. They also sell beer and greeting cards. The vibe was more Philly Cheesesteak stand than hot dog joint.

Storage Wars Portraits - Dave Hester and Mark Balelo

New episodes tonight.. Looks like some serious Dave Hester moments including Dave rolling up with a giant brand new truck with "YUUUP!" along the side in 8 foot tall letters. This is why I love this show.

So here's some attempts at drawing Hester who if you don't know now has a full line of YUUUP products available on his website, check out the "gift pack" which includes a magnet of Dave's face and an "easy button" (like the Staples thing) that says "YUUUUUUUP" when you press it.

Also my favorite random not-really-a-character Mark Bolelo who was in maybe 3 episodes, carried a purse, looked like a 1980's drug lord, and thought an old Nintendo was worth $13,000. I was sort of hoping he would become a permanent character in the second season but nothing so far. Apparently he was also somehow involved in Nicholas Cage's stolen Action Comics #1 that was found in a Californiua storage locker.

Poster for Mike & Patty's I finished a while back. Mike & Patty's is an awesome sandwich shop in Boston that I REALLY want to go to. Really delicious looking sandwiches aling with a bunch of different hot dogs and lots of specials. Reminds me a lot of Fricano's in Austin and honestly the sort of place I would want to open if I ever did something like that.

Storage Wars Portraits

So yeah, Storage Wars is pretty much my favorite TV show of all time. It's pretty real and unlike most of this stuff seems unscripted. Most of these dudes knew each other before the cameras ever started rolling and the only thing that's changed is that they all now fight with each other on twitter and have Storage Wars - related clothing lines for people that like motorcycles, palm trees, gambling and wearing sunglasses anywhere but on your face.

Anyway the new season starts today and instead of blowing my savings on a storage locker in Jersey City I've been working on some portraits of people from the show. First up is auctioneer Don Dotson (check out americanauctioneers.com and follow @auctionguydan on the twitter)

Next up is Barry Weiss who might be my favorite - and probably the best likeness I've gotten so far- who always shows up in some sort of customized hot rod and throws out 99% of the stuff he wins. But then every so often finds stuff so amazing (like hand painted 1930's carnival sideshow banners) that it's hard to believe the show isn't rigged. Check out Barry's twitter (@barrycollector) although I'm not sure it's really him.

And then his buddy "Boston Joe" (or Bro Joe?) who showed up for a couple episodes and looked like a cross between Rob Halford and Batman. Random characters are another bonus here, like Dave Hester's brother who showed up out the blue to screw Dave on an auction and then you never see him again.

Don't worry I'm also working on Dave, Darrel, Brandy & Jerrod.. and whatever new characters pop up this season.

Hairy Baltimore

Recently contributed these drawings to an awesome book put together by master hair renderer Alex Fine. Illustrations of local Baltimore celebrities with interesting hair by over 20 different artists. I contributed a portrait of Vincent Black Shadow singer Adam Savage and one of a guy named "Kool-Aid" who has a blue mohawk (maybe I need to do a color version?) and checkers shaved into the side of his head.

It's a limited edition book so no word if it's available to order but Atomic Books would probably be your best bet. And LOTS of thanks to Alex for giving me something to draw that's not dripping with chili grease and cheese whiz!

Sort of a different style for the Hot Dog Of The Week art. At first I was worried it would look funny but the black & white actually really stands out on Serious Eats among all the spinning twirling full color pop up ads of Tyler Florence or whatever. And Lafayette Coney Island is pretty much the best place in the world.

Here's a rejected cover I did for Baltimore Citypaper's annual Sizzlin' Summer Issue. Maybe our concept of mixing Inner Harbor touristy crap with Baltimore trashiness didn't go over so well with the editors??

Even so it's always a blast to work with AD Joe Macleod who has been giving me great work for years (check out this illo I did about Evan Wright and Generation Kill way back in 2004 ) and is also a great source for Baltimore area hot dog recommendations.

So many cartoonists have done hilarious & awesome fake ads in the back of their books over the years. Somebody needs to do a whole book on this. Anyway these were a blast to draw I could do about 100 of them, if I ever put out a comic book again I'll probably do a whole mess of them.

Thanks to my prized 1943 Johnson Smith Catalog there was endless inspiration. The only problem is after you spend 10 minutes with this book you realize there is no way you can write or draw anything funnier or stranger than the crazy shit that people were really buying in 1943.

Mind blowing traditional German sausage shop in the middle of Albany. Hand made frankfurters, kielbasa, ring bologna, everything smoked in house. Amazing.

•Yesterdog
Super cool hot dog place in Grand Rapids, Michigan that's been there since the 70's. No burgers and trying to order a "plain hot dog" might get you kicked out. Big thanks to photographer Mike Donk for tipping me off and sending awesome photos.

• Blackie's
Old School Connecticut hot dog joint, one of many featured in the documentary A Connecticut Hot Dog Tour. Blackie's will also be selling these prints at the restaurant in a few weeks!

• Fricano's Deli
Awesome sandwich spot in Austin, Texas. Great sandwiches and a bunch of signature dogs including Chicago style and the Reuben Dog. They also do specials every once in a while like a pretty damn authentic Venezuelan Dog. The Reuben dog as well as a few of my other prints are available for sale at the Deli itself, thanks guys! My buddy Garrett Morlan has also done some awesome posters for them, which I'm fairly sure are also available to purchase.

Old Dirty Bastard and SXSW

First two are about all the awesome new corporate sponsors at SXSW and the Legacy of Tastykakes, Old Dirty Bastard and the rise of Gucci Mane, whose new album "The Return Of Mister Zone 6" I've been listening to non stop for a week.

On The Radar 2005-2009

Before my hot dog days I illustrated a weekly column for PW called On The Radar written by the legendary and hilarious Steven Wells. Starting with an article about gay republican cowboys in 2005 I cranked these out every week. Topics ranged from politics (George Bush as a Trekkie with Boobs??) to music (Lots of articles about how Belle & Sebastian and Henry Rollins are terrible) sports, pop culture, and how Americans were all secretly gay 400 pound gun toting rednecks.

A lot of the old drawings make me cringe.. I still worked in a kitchen back then and some of these were done in 3 hours on a tuesday morning, half an hour before press time and 45 minutes before I had to be in chef whites pounding out 75 tuna carpaccios. One day I'll archive all the illustrations and link back to the original articles, until then here's some of my favorites.

Steven passed away in 2009 and I don't think I really understood how lucky I was to be illustrating his stuff until reading the stories about his life and work that poured in from all over the world.

Along with being a blast to read and draw Steven's rants each week, illustrating On The Radar was really the project that pushed me into becoming an actual professional full time illustrator, so a huge thanks to Steven and art directors Sara Green and Tim Gough for actually letting this stuff go to print.

So for Willamette Week's annual Cheap Eats Guide they asked me to do a hot dog T-shirt design, that they actually printed and put on a dude that sort of looks like me and squirted some mustard on him. Awesome.

The photos were all shot by photographer Chris Ryan.

Along with the photo on the pull-out Cheap Eats Guide they also used a full color version of the design for the cover of the issue.

La Taco Madness 2011

Recently finished this illustration for LA TACO's 2011 "Taco Madness" which is a March Madness bracket style competition pitting 32 of Los Angeles best tacos against each other.

Checking out photo after photo of LA tacos made me pretty hungry and jealous of the taco scene out there. Anyway it was awesome to go outside the hot dog zone, some prints of the art will be available soon!

Rachael Ray Hot Dog Bracket

Last year, Every Day With Rachael Ray magazine asked Serious Eats (website I do the Hot Dog Of The Week illustrations for) to do a basketball-bracket style "best hot dog in the country" article and I was lucky enough to be a part of it.

While Serious Eats head honchos Ed Levine and Adam Kuban were in Arizona, Chicago, New York and the West Coast I was driving across the South hitting 5, 6, 7 hot dog joints a day. Along with eating and writing I also did a bunch of illustrations for the article, just published in this month's magazine.

You can check out the bracket here or grab the magazine but I wanted to post the full size paintings and bunch of stuff that they didn't use.

These quick napkin sketches (I did about 30 of them) were going to be photographed with some actual hot dogs but they ended up not being used.

Also not used was a bunch of lettering for the different sections of the article, a lot of which was fashioned after the awesome hand-painted signs at Angelo's Coney Island in Flint, Michigan. Check out my recent post on Angelo's for more photos.

Also some spot illustrations of "hot dog drink pairings" like Cheerwine with Pulliam's Slaw Dog and Moxie with a Flo's dog.

Much thanks to Serious Eats and everyone at Rachael Ray magazine. It was incredible to illustrate a story I had actually experienced and something I'd love to do again, whether it be hot dogs or something else entirely.

inside the hot dog studio

So for a while there last year I was trying to do my weekly hot dog illustrations faster by doing black & white line art and coloring them in photoshop. Make time for comics and some non-hot dog related projects. But I couldn't shake it feeling like a shortcut and the art just didn't come out the same. Also none of them were really nice enough to make into prints.

Anyway I'm back to the old school putting my colors down with a brush instead of clicking a mouse. Takes a little longer but totally worth it in the long run. It feels like small parts of a larger project rather than just a throw away hacked out image.

I have about 20 of these to do in the next month between Serious Eats and other freelance projects. A couple of them aren't even hot dogs believe it or not!

2010 Hot Dog Illustration Madness

Here's a bunch of hot dog related illustration I did in 2010 and haven't posted yet, including a poster for Farmer John (a Los Angeles meat company), a bunch of paintings for Fig Restaurant in Santa Monica (for their special summer hot dog menu) and some illustrations I was working on for an international hot dog place in South America (a project that sadly seems to have kicked the bucket).

These paintings were all meant for a hot dog restaurant in Brazil that never opened. The idea was international hot dogs with insane toppings, think Hot Doug's or Bark but riffing on European and South American hot dog styles rather than American. I had to translate everything to Portuguese which was pretty awesome. Really sad that this didn't work out- there was going to be 10 different dogs plus 10 smaller illos of the regions for packaging or whatever.

Tote bag for Philly food blog Foobooz. They wanted a street scene of one of Philly's new "restaurant rows" and I went with East Passyunk since it's not only 4 blocks from my house but also an awesome mix of old south philly stuff and new hipster yuppie stuff (and people).

When I was shooting photos the guy in the butcher shop came out in his bloody apron and started screaming at me about insurance and lawyers or something. Awesome. Won't stop me from going there for some cheap chicken parts though.

It was tough to simplify it enough so that it would work for a screenprint, there's about 100 more places I wanted to jam in there - especially the amazing Patrick Nagel-esque King Of Jeans sign.

Another massive hot dog project, in progress.

Am I sick of them? Sometimes. But just as often happily surprised by new and exciting hot dogs, and just as important - new and exciting places to eat them.

My Dad is even in on the mission now, coming back from weekend trips to tiny Pennsylvania coal towns with photos of hot dog joints I've never heard of.

Richie Records T-Shirts

Here's a way to pick up a non - bootleg Hawk Krall shirt. I did this design for Richie Records years ago and they finally printed up some sweet shirts.

Richie Records is one of Philadelphia's last remaining stongholds of actual punk rock, related projects being Clockcleaner, Kurt Vile, the Homostupids, Violent Students, and Music For Your Methlab, Philly's best radio show that has sadly come to an end.

These guys have given me some terrific work over the years including this infamous cover of the Violent Students LP which is still one of my favorites.

Honestly, if I saw my hot dog paintings on some all-over-print oversized ghetto t-shirt in chinatown I would be sort of pissed but also kind of psyched, and probably even buy one. A Connecticut Hot Dog Tour

Recently finished this DVD cover for a fantastic new documentary about Connecticut hot dogs. The main artwork is actually pretty large for me, somewhere around 3 feet wide.

Connecticut hot dog joints are chock full of amazing old lettering which helped make the art a blast to do. Mark (the filmmaker) provided me with some awesome reference photos.

In some crazy cross promotion madness, we also featured a few of the places from the documentary in my weekly hot dog column on Serious Eats, which might have been sketchy if they weren't some of the most legendary hot dog joints in the country. Also helps that the film is basically a labor of love that Mark has funded all by himself, so I was happy to help out.

The history of Super Duper Weenie actually goes back to a John Baeder, a fantastic superrealist / pop art painter and one of my favorites.Current Super Duper owner Gary Zimola saw the original truck in a book of Baeder paintings, and with the artist's help tracked down the truck, bought it, and turned it into an operating hot dog truck, and eventually a brick and mortar restaurant.

Baeder is known mostly for his diner paintings of the late 70's but is still going strong documenting hot dog stands and taco trucks all over the country. Check them out at Johnbaeder.com.

Check out this crazy exploded burger illustration for Cincinnati Magazine's "40 Best Burgers" Issue. The original painting is so big it hung off the sides of my drawing table. Seriously one of the coolest freelance jobs I've done.

Also- Cincinnati's best Veggie Burger. Honestly I had no idea Cincinnati had such an awesome food scene outside of 4-way chili. Places like Senate that do wild burgers along with korean kimchi & shortrib hot dogs and even a croque madame with ham and hot dog on brioche drowned in bechamel sauce and a fried egg. Wow.

Here's a nugget from a job about Philadelphia local & seasonal food that was never published. Rocky shopping for organic produce and Mayor Nutter chowing down on a grass-fed burger from South Philadelphia Tap Room.

It's always a bummer when stuff gets the axe and maybe they thought the portrait of Mayor Nutter was too "cartoony" or "caricature-ish" but I think Nutter is great and would love to see him chowing down on some hamburgers.

Crazy sandwich design for a Serious Eats promotional re-usable Baggu shopping bag. A whole fried fish, sausages, random deli meats, lettuce and tomato. Hot dogs are great to draw but it's nice to branch out into some other food groups every so often.

Pretty much everything I'm working on right now is food related, which is amazing, but I'm hungry all the time. I'm pretty sure the part of the brain that's used to mix colors and cook is the same. I almost want to lick the brush to make sure it tastes right.

But it's really disappointing to paint slow braised carnitas and juicy burgers all day, then open the fridge to find off-brand english muffins, 2 week old chinese take-out, and a solitary chicken drumstick in the freezer.

Sketches

Behind every finished piece of art is a trail of sketches, scribbles, mountains of crumpled tracing paper and unused concepts. Sometimes I look back and wish I could incorporate some of the looser compositions into finished pieces.

I'm absolutely in awe of artists who go right from a blank page to finished product - including people that do super realistic, tight work, I can't even fathom how this is possible.

This drawing of Philly mayor Michael Nutter I thought turned out awesome and was of bummed that the job it was for was never printed.

Anyway seriously if anyone cares about these things I will send you hundreds of sketches for a few bucks, otherwise most of them go right in the trash.

Cincinnati in NYC

Illustration for Cincinnati Magazine, about a bar in NYC that serves Skyline Chili & Graeters ice cream during Bengals games for displaced Cincinnatians.

Every time I draw Cincinnati Chili or Coneys people go wild and I get emails from strangers and friends who I didn't even know were from Ohio. You people have some serious pride for your chili.. and for good reason, it's great stuff.

As far as the process goes the concept was pretty straightforward. Bengals fans in a NYC bar with piles of Cincy chili and Graeter's. Lucky for me, one of the bars that does this - Phebe's - has an awesome "olde time NYC" feeling so the background is based on what the bar actually looks like.

So the next step is always to decide whether to do an actual painting (pretty time consuming for this much detail) or just do pen & ink and pop the colors in with Photoshop. Or this hybrid technique that I've used a few times, I think most successfully for a Willamette Week food guide cover.

I do the line work first, scan it and print a copy out, then transfer an outline onto printmaking paper. Then I paint a few important elements and anything that I want to have texture, and also establish a general color scheme, which comes a lot easier to me with paint than a blank screen.

Next comes the photoshop nightmare of lining up the painting with the black line, cleaning up the edges (or not) and filling in all the remaining details. Usually at this point it looks like hell and I scream at my computer, but eventually it looks sort of awesome.

For free comic book day (May 1st) I contributed a short comic about being a grumpy old man to Atomic Books' Mutant #1, a pack of mini-comics that you can pick up for free at the store in Baltimore and (I think) with any order from their website for a limited amount of time.

Feels good to get back into the comics again. It's definitely "comics season" ... I have a bunch of stuff in the works for Hive and Grimalkin Press' upcoming Food Service anthology, which will be amazing.

Since it's Atomic Books all the contributors are fantastic, and you should definitely check it out. Also, It's got an awesome drawing (not mine) of Snooki on the cover.

Gardening Cover for the Alibi

The Weekly Alibi out of Albequerque asked me to do a cover for their gardening issue with the theme being along the lines of a "Black Thumb" involving the Grim Reaper.

Snooki Munny - Vinylmore III

For Atomic Books' 3rd Vinyl toy show, opening Friday, April 2nd in Baltimore.

A bit disappointed not to get a 100% likeness.. thought she'd be easy to draw but her face is really hard to get down, she always ends up looking sort of Asian or Indian. Even tougher on a tiny 2 inch plastic head. This was my first time going 3-D and adding sculpey to one of these things (for the "bump") and thought it worked out pretty well.

Also discovered the joy of 59 cent acrylics from AC Moore. Some of the colors look great and some don't. And be careful if you mix them, sometimes yellow + blue = brown. Best to use them straight from the tube and just buy every color because they are SO cheap.

Perro Caliente

I was a little hesitant to do a pepto bismol pink hot dog background but it goes perfectly with the crazy Colombian fast food places I visited in Queens a few weeks ago. Sometimes when I paint these things I sort of forget I'm mixing gouache and not mayonnaise and mustard. Usually those turn out the best. New prints coming next week (including this one).

If you don't know, Colombian hot dogs are topped with crushed chips and all kind of crazy mess- pineapples, bacon, ham, cheese, fruit sauce, mayo, russian dressing, hard boiled eggs.

Went with a looser style for last week's Hot Dog Of The Week illustration. The article was more of a recipe so I drew it basically the same as I would have in my notebooks back when I really worked in a kitchen, just without the grease stains.

Noah's comics are freakin' hilarious. If you like Crumb, Bagge, Joe Matt, Harvey Pekar, etc... and are wondering what the hell happened to people that wrote comics like that look no further. Buy everything he's published so far and check out his interview strips on the Comics Journal website and Westword.

David Johansen - Garrett Morlan
Garrett is a friend from art school who recently moved to Seattle and hooked me up with some great photos & research for my Seattle hot dog article on Serious Eats. Sent him a hot dog giclee and got this terrific New York Dolls print in return. Garrett's been doing some killer portraits lately, check out his work at garrettmorlan.com.

Serving Suggestion - Hugo
Traded an old Screw cover original for this one. Hugo's work is totally over the top and incredible. Lots of lucious giant jiggling asses and Basil Wolverton-esque monster faced old dudes. Cool Heart - Kris Chau
Chau puts together these zines every so often made up of the zillions of ink drawings that wallpaper her studio. Her work is awesome and you should buy all of it all the time so she can quit her job and write more posts for the food blog.

St Louis Style - Dan Zettwoch
Zettwoch's comics and illustration absolutely blow me away, and drives me nuts because it's so hard to find his stuff, so I was super psyched that he was into trading me one of these St Louis food prints for a hot dog print. Bambi - Kaitlin Mosley

Pat is the founder of the Philly Alt Comic Con where we traded some comics and I especially love this screen printed 4 pager. Portrait of Frank (Danny Devito) from It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, done for a christmas present. Note the pocket sausages from a recent episode. I literally fall on the floor laughing every time I watch this show.

Some portraits I get a spot-on likeness in 30 seconds with the first drawing. I thought Frank/Devito would be a piece of cake but it took me at least 25 sketches and 10 layers of tracing paper to get his face right. Kind of like when you lose your keys or something, annoying but so satisfying when you finally find it.

Just finished a short 2 page "Summer of 7-11" comic for Hive #3.

The store where I worked seemed to carry every obscure brand of cigarette you could imagine. Working graveyard shift there wasn't much to do but check them out and keep logs of what kind of cigarettes people bought. This story plus 4 more pages will be in Hive #3, due out in early November.

Hive is a "somewhat quarterly comics journal" from Grimalkin Press with some really nice letterpress covers and a great line up of cartoonists.

Latest Hot Dog Of The Week.
Detroit and Michigan serve their hot dogs blanketed in heaping mounds of Greek chili made with beef hearts and kidneys .

In case you're confused, Detroit Coney dogs have little to do with Coney Island in Brooklyn. Greek immigrants who stopped at Coney Island in NY on their way to Michigan opened up diners called "Coney Islands" and called their chili and mustard covered dogs "Coneys".

I didn't even realize when I was painting this last week, but apparently they filmed a scene from Whip It - Drew Barrymore's new Roller Derby movie - at Lafayette Coney Island, one of the oldest & most well known of Detroit's Coney spots.

Psyched to design this shirt for WPRB's 2009 membership drive. I've been listening to WPRB since I was in high school.. first place I heard everything from the Modern Lovers to the Gorilla Biscuits. So I'll be at the First Annual Philly Alternative Comic-Con this Sunday! I might even have copies of the brand-new Prize Comics #2, collecting pretty much all the comics I've done in the last 3 years. (working on the final pages as we speak, I'll be stapling Saturday Night at 4am...)

There's going to be a bunch of awesome people there, including Charles Burns, Hans Rickheit, Jesse Moynihan, Space 1026 and the Philly Comix Jam folks, including Pat Aulisio who set the whole thing up. Hopefully the first of many years of Philly comics domination.

Latest Hot Dog Of The Week. Pretty much one of the best things about NYC is that you can still get a pineapple/coconut juice and 2 hot dogs for 3 dollars at one o'clock in the morning. There was a Papaya King in Philadelphia in 1937 and again in 2001 but neither lasted too long.

I'll have some prints of the newer designs soon, in the meantime I've still got these for sale!
